Excuses vs. The Fitness Lifestyle

People come up with all kinds of reasons to justify why they’ve failed at what they set out to do. As far as health and fitness goes, I’ve heard every excuse in the book, and I want to tell you that your excuse is no different than anyone elses. All that excuses do is separate us into two categories: the doers and the non-doers. If something is important enough, you’ll find a way, if not, you’ll find an excuse. It really is as simple as that. Here are some of the worst excuses I have heard, and my personal advice to those who use them.

Excuse #1 – I don’t have time to workout

There’s never enough time for anything, it doesn’t matter what kind of lifestyle you have. What you need to do is MAKE time, or FIND time where you would otherwise be sitting on facebook, watching TV, or doing something else. Make some sacrifices, that’s where it starts. What about your lunch break at work? You can carry a skipping rope and do even 10 or 15 minutes of jumping — and this will give you greater results than an hour on the treadmill. Not to mention, energy to keep you awake the rest of the work day. Humans don’t have to spend hours doing workouts to see results. HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) is the best form of cardio. You could spend 20 minutes, 3 times a week to get all your required cardio in. I’d like to know what exactly is so hard about that? If you have kids, play outside with them. Some examples of HIIT are hill sprints, skipping rope, kettlebell swings, pushups, jumping jacks. So go to the park a few days a week and sprint with your kids. Stuck at home with infant? Skip or do something close by when baby is sleeping. You have the choice to either make time or make… more excuses.

Excuse #2 – I can’t afford a gym membership

If you are under the impression that you need access to a gym facility to get your regular exercise in, you are sorely mistaken, and should cut all ties with whomever told you such garbage. Unless weight training is your primary goal, you do NOT need a gym membership. I’ve already spoken about HIIT, and most of that can be done outside on a field. Go outside! Run, sprint, buy some cheap runners from Wal-Mart, that’s what I did when I started running. You don’t have to be rich to be in shape.

Excuse #3 – I can’t afford to eat healthy

This is the single excuse that bothers me the most. Anyone can afford to eat healthy. Vegetables are incredibly inexpensive. Most fruits are not a health requirement, so forget those for now. Last I checked, a head of lettuce was $1. Stock of celery $.79. Bag of baby carrots: $1.69. So what exactly is stopping you from making a salad, or a stir-fry? As for meat, if the prices don’t appeal to you then buy it in bulk, and freeze. You’re guaranteed to get your monies worth. As for carbs, you could buy a massive bag of rice that will last you for months — don’t live off that though. Every time you get paid, invest in a few spices or other cooking staples. Before you know it, you’ll be cooking up a delicious smelling storm, on a regular basis.

One thing I find is that the people who tell me it’s too expensive to eat properly, are the same people who go out and drink a dozen beers while feasting on pub food. How is it that we can always justify eating out at restaurants, yet we can’t eat properly at home due to “costs”? How can you say that you don’t have enough money for good food, when you eat out every week, some people multiple times per week. How can you say that when you’re walking around with a brand new cell phone, all the latest gadgets, brand new car, etc? The solution is to make some sacrifices, learn how to cook, and stop going out all the time!

Personally, my partner and I almost never go to social events. Maybe once a month we’ll see a movie and if we’re lucky, go out to eat. This is how we can afford organic, lean, grass fed beef on our very tight grocery budget. I don’t expect everyone to jump on the organic bandwagon, but when it comes to basic vegetables and protein, there’s no excuse for you not to eat them at home. They are affordable. If your lifestyle isn’t, then you need to make some major changes. What you don’t spend on proper food now, you’ll be spending in the future on medical bills and medications. The choice is yours, and only you can be accountable.

If you are falling victim to one of these excuses, and are still saying “yeah but”… then I’d say that you are just that type of person who doesn’t get a whole heck of a lot accomplished. You probably make excuses for all sorts of things in life, and complain to other people about your problems.

If you are simply too lazy to work out and couldn’t be bothered, then suit yourself but don’t complain to other people about your weight and don’t you dare take up two seats on my airplane!

Oh, don’t think for a second that the slogan “skinny is out” means that fat is in. Fat is most certainly not in, in fact, it’s worse. What you want to achieve is a muscular build yet also be lean at the same time.
